Education
The Louisiana Gene Therapy Research Consortium's educational
goals are to provide career development, job training, and life-long
learning opportunities in gene therapy, genetics, and life sciences.
LGTRC's Vice President of Education, Dr. Paula Gregory,
frequents classrooms within our partner institutions as well as high
schools throughout Louisiana to teach students about the importance
of DNA and gene and cell therapy. Students get hands-on experience
with research techniques to learn about gene mutations and how gene
therapies can be used to correct genetic disorders.
Several initiatives have been implemented:
• Teacher workshops to help High School teachers
plan and develop courses so students have a better understanding
of Genomics and Gene Therapy.
• Summer Internship programs in gene therapy research for Louisiana undergraduate
students.
• A National Science Foundation minority graduate student program.
• Gene therapy seminars for healthcare professionals to introduce them
to the therapies they may be using in the future.
• Participation in healthcare forums to further the public's understanding
of how gene and cell therapies are changing the way we think about disease.
