Adult Stem Cells

Adult stem cell from a patient's own bone marrow can be expanded and then used in the same patient to target diseases of the central nervous system, the bones, cartilage and many other tissues. In some diseases, the stem cells do not need to be gene engineered because the cells are part of the body's natural repair system.

Stem cells are named because they are like the stems of a plant that can produce new leaves and flowers each year. Each stem cell has the remarkable property that allows it to divide and produce a perfect copy of itself together with a second cell that can become a workhorse cell of the body such as a bone or nerve cell.

Mesenchymal stem cells may provide therapies for a variety of common diseases including osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, spinal cord injury, stroke, cardiac diseases, and pulmonary diseases.
